Art and Us

Art and Us

MK Gallery is passionate about providing access to art and creative activities for all. In addition to our world-class exhibitions, we have a learning programme for children, young people, families, and people with complex needs.

Our Art and Us programme, weekly arts sessions for families who have children with complex needs, is a prime example of the accessibility of our work. A parent who comes along to the session provided the feedback below.

I have twin boys with chromosome disorders, autism and they are both non-verbal. They struggle with sensory processing and find it difficult to interact with adults and peers. Activities that we can get involved with as a family are limited, and that's why inclusive programmes like Art and Us are vital to families like ours.

The twin’s confidence has grown and grown each time they have attended. They go straight to their Artist, and automatically feel relaxed in the space (which is rare for them). They are beginning to show their own individual preferences and they are very decisive in what they want to create. We get lots of positive non-verbal communication, as well as lots of happy noises. Their self-esteem continues to grow and it's amazing to see the pride they take in what they create.

As a parent it is delightful to come to a session without judgement and watch your children flourish. Their happy, content, smiley faces make our day and it's amazing to have positive experiences to share together as a family.

Thanks to the Arts and Us team for providing an invaluable programme for children who are often isolated and excluded. Thanks for entering into their world rather than expecting them to meet a world that is often scary and overwhelming. You all do a fantastic job and we can't wait for the next one!”
